To train your puppy, one has to be patient in your ways and approaches. One of the most important aspects of dog training is to provide an enclosure to the dog in the contour of using a crate. Puppy housebreaking is a common practice and a crate serves as an effective tool to provide success in your puppy potty training. Other than taking care of housebreaking, the crate enables the dogs to decrease its anxiety of separation, and prevents behaviors, which may be destructive. Another advantage to train your puppy with the crate is mostly during stays in hotels and while traveling. It is preferable if the dog gets crate training at an early stage. However, one has to ensure that crates are not a means to punish the pups or as a confinement for them. Crate training discourages indoor dog potty . It aids the dog throughout its lifetime and helps it is helpful tool for all concerned as well. One can remove the door of the crate also once the dog gets used to it. Vari-Kennel type If your puppy accepts the crate without hesitation, there is no need to use this technique. Otherwise you can remove the screws of the crate that would open the door and let the puppy go inside and outside at her/his free will. This would train your puppy against crate potty as well. Though it may take few days, your hard work would surely be beneficial in a long run.

Wire Mesh type Train your puppy by keeping open the doors of the crate by tying its door to the back. This would give enough space for the puppy to more freedom and would not give him a sense of seclusion and confinement.

Furnishing Crate to make it attractive for your puppy

Toys and Treats: Ensure that the toys and balls that you place in the crate are not too small that your pet could swallow them. In addition, one can put a marrow bone by sterilizing it and filling it with dog treats.

Water: A water dispenser is necessary in the crate and continuously refilled.

Bedding: Bedding is important to make your pet’s crate comfortable and cozy, so your puppy feels like she/he is in her/his den. It is furthermore important during winters to provide extra soft bedding.

Location of Crate Try and place the crate close where you are sitting. This will train your puppy to go automatically inside his/her crate without feeling lonely and isolated.

Introducing the Crate to Your Puppy Train a puppy to enjoy in his crate by: • Keep hiding dog biscuits in the crate to let him find edible treasures and enjoy. • Praising pet when it enters the crate is an important aspect to train your puppy and dogs. • Play educational games with it while training, make it fun • Crate your puppy/dog only when you are at home initially, so your puppy will feel comfortable. Then as your puppy/dog is enjoying his/her new crate you can try short period’s of times when you are outside, or close to home for your puppy/dog to be crated.?

Things to keep in mind while Crate training Collars: Remove the collar from your puppy prior to putting your puppy/dog going into the crate as it may get stuck in the mesh wired crate. Weather: When weather is not comfortable, avoid crating your puppy/dog.

New pet owners will save a lot of furniture and shredded newspapers by training puppies not to bite when they are young. New pet owners who train their puppies early will enjoy each others company for a lifetime. Are your family members complaining that Fido has a puppy biting problem? Do you need to learn how to house train a puppy because the new pet that you got for the children sometimes soils the carpet? Then nip the problem in the bud by reading these tips for new puppies.

Identify the behavior signs.

Observe your new puppy and his routines, in order to target the training issues that are problematic. If your new puppy is tearing up magazines or newspapers you will have to catch him in the act and again, use the command word “No,” then immediately clean up the mess in front of him. Right after you feed your new puppy you will want to take him for a short walk around the neighborhood. You will need to keep the puppy focused on the routine when they are paying attention to you.

Remain consistent.

When you’ve had your puppy for awhile, the times that you need to focus your training should become apparent. Once the training begins try to stay consistent. A puppy biting problem may have to include all family members so plan ahead. Keep your command words simple for the puppy so he can relate the word to the problem. Eventually he will recognize the command and avoid the behavior that is associated with your authority. Bathroom activity training can be timed for after the puppy’s meal time. If your timing is consistent with walking the puppy outside after mealtime, the puppy will establish a routine.

Give puppy a treat.

Small tokens of affection or treats should be used to encourage the puppy for positive results. You will accelerate the training with treats and rewards. The puppy will begin to understand that the treats are related to the behavior. House breaking a puppy is best achieved with walks around the neighborhood right after their meals.

Use positive reinforcement.

A lot of reinforcement is needed with new puppies. What is important to the puppy is that he understands what he did wrong. Puppies have to be able to relate what they have done to what displeases you. The attention span and memory of puppies are very short, and you cannot expect then to remember a problem after a period of time has elapsed.

Training puppies not to bite is not as hard as you may think, just stay consistent and reward the good behavior and the puppy biting problem will go away with time. While not everyone knows how to house train a puppy, if they apply the tips in this article to their methods the job will be easy. New pet owners just have to remember to have patience during the training process will give their new puppy some time to adjust.

Tips For House Training Your New Puppy

]]>

Bringing a new puppy into your family is an exciting time for everyone.  You want to make sure this homecoming is as smooth as possible, which means you need to take some time properly preparing for this.

One of the first things you want to prepare for is house training, this is also a big challenge especially for first time dog owners. If you get yourself some basic knowledge and keep a positive attitude, you will have an easier time than some people make it out to be.

The New Arrival

When you first arrive home with your new puppy, keep him/her outside as the excitement of new faces and places will make him/her need to potty.  In this way your puppy’s first time will be outdoors and not in the house so as to get your new beginning off to a good start.  This will also help get your puppy accustomed to “doing his/her business” outside and not in the house as you don’t want your puppy getting use to going in the house.

Here are some things you want to do:

- Take him/her to the specific area where you decided the toilet is going to be.

- Patiently wait while he/she sniffs around.  Do not play or pet your puppy as you don’t want them to associate that area with playtime only with going potty in that area.

- When he/she begins to relieve themselves say the phase you want them to associate with potty time such as “go potty” or “go pee”.  Just keep it simple and use the same phase each time and use the same voice inflection so that your puppy will recognize it and know what it means.

- When he/she is finished make a big fuss, shower your puppy with praise and give them a treat.

Your training of your new puppy has just begun and when you bring them indoors you should continue with the training schedule you have decided on before you brought your puppy home.

When it comes to house training, crate training is an acceptable and efficient method of house training in a short period of time.

What exactly is crate training?

Crate training is the use of a smaller kennel, dog carrier or crate to keep your puppy in when you aren’t able to keep an eye on them.

How does this work?

This method is based on the fact that dogs instinct is not to potty where they sleep.  As long as your puppy isn’t kept in there for very long, they will “hold it” until you come and take them outside to your designated area.

Choosing the right crate.

As a general rule the crate should big enough for him/her to grow into.  That when he/she is an adult dog they will be able to stand up comfortably, be able to turn around and lay down but not much bigger than that as you don’t want them using part of is to “potty” and part of it to sleep in. Though depending on your dog breed you may have to put a barrier of some sort until they grow into their crate.

How to use the crate for house training?

The crate should be used for all times your puppy is not napping, eating, outside with you or being played with.  Consistency is the key here, it will not take your puppy long to get use to this routine at all.  This will insure that your puppy doesn’t relieve themselves in the house before they are fully housebroken. And you don’t want to find any “surprises” in your house either.

Make and keep a schedule for your puppy.  Remember he/she is a baby so they will need to be taken out when they first wake up, after they eat, after naps and after playtime.  If too much time goes between potty breaks they are more likely to have an accident indoors and once they go indoors it will be easier for them to go indoors again and you don’t want that.  The older your puppy gets the less time they will need to spend in the crate but don’t do that too soon.

Other rules about crate training

At first your puppy won’t be happy being in the crate as they would rather be out with you getting attention and playing, but it won’t take them too long to get use to being in there. It is important not to give in when he/she cries, you are in charge not the puppy.

Put the crate where ever you are so that he/she still feels like part of the family and not being isolated as you don’t want the them to feel like they are being punished while in the crate.

Make the crate comfortable for your puppy with a think blanket or towels. Put a toy or a dog chew inside for them.  Unless your puppy is in there, leaving the door open will invite him/her to lay inside giving them their own personal space just for them.

Here are some more things to keep in mind; puppies have small bladders and bowels so there isn’t much time between them realizing they need to go and when they go. So take them out often and usually ten minutes after they eat or playtime.  If you notice your puppy sniffing and circling the floor, take him/her out right away.  Better to take them out unnecessarily than to have a mess to clean up indoors.

Keep in mind that your puppy can only “hold it” for so long, so remember this tip; maximum time equals puppy’s age (in months) plus one.  So if your puppy is three months old, four hours is the longest she can hold it and that might be stretching it.  Aim to take your puppy out every two hours, unless of course he/she is napping.

What To Feed Puppies – Don’t Kill Them Just Because They’re Cute!

Who doesn’t love puppies? If you’re thinking about bringing one home, or the little yipping ball of fur is already in your house, then you really need to know what to feed and what not to feed the little guy.

You probably already know this but puppyhood is the most important developmental time in a dog’s life. A puppy’s nutritional needs are very different from that of an adult dog. What you feed him and how you feed him will play a large role in his development into a healthy active adult.

So are you ready for that first bowl of chow?

When you first get your new canine pal, find out what kind of food he was getting from the breeder or shelter. His young digestive system can’t handle big changes immediately and you should slowly take him off the original food and on to the brand you have selected.  Start with a mix of 90% original and 10% of your brand and work it down to 100% of your brand over a period of 10 days.

Speaking of brands, make sure you are using puppy food not adult food. Puppy food usually has higher concentrations of nutritional values needed to accommodate a growing dog.

Dog food comes in three varieties, dry, semi-moist and wet. Without question, the dry food is the best value and also offers a number of other benefits. Moist and semi-moist foods are between 25% to 60% water, have an odor, and do not provide the puppy with an opportunity to clean his teeth. A steady diet of wet food will result in dental problems in the future not to mention bad breath.

Dry dog foods have a higher concentration of nutrients by volume, are easier to store and serve, and provide an opportunity for your pet to chew something rough which will help clean his teeth. Know that with puppy food, you get what you pay for. The bargain brands use the cheapest ingredients and will not have the same nutritional value as the premium brands.

So that’s the “what to feed him” and now comes the “when to feed him”. If you think about it for a moment, controlling when the puppy is fed becomes one of the first steps in puppy training. Initially the puppy should eat three times a day. Remove his food bowl between meals as you want him to get in the practice of eating at specific times. Eating at specific times will also mean that he will have to do his business at specific times making it easier for you to housebreak.

That said, make sure the dog always has access to fresh water. These are durable little creatures who could lose half their body mass but if they lose just 15% of their water content they could die.

Okay, what shouldn’t you feed your new pal? Take a moment and run through these:

Table scraps. Studies have shown that puppies, and adult dogs for that matter, who eat only dog food have a far healthier diet than we humans have. Table scraps will typically be high in saturated fat, salt and preservatives and these can not be digested by a puppy stomach. In fact it may result in diarrhea. Milk. Most breeds are lactose intolerant because they do not have the enzyme lactase to digest it. Consequently, don’t feed your puppy cow’s milk or milk products like cheese. Animal bones. I know that dogs have been chewing on these since the beginning of time, but most experts will agree that bones, particularly fish, chicken and pork, can get stuck in the dog’s throat. I can personally attest to the danger to humans after stepping on a gnawed to a razor’s edge pork chop bone and breaking my big toe in the process. Treats. Doggy treats should be used to reinforce good behavior, not as a mainstay of the puppy’s diet.

So there you have it. Know you know how to get your new pup off to a healthy start. I’m sure you know there are a ton of other areas that you are going to have to be ready to address like canine illnesses, behavior training and separation anxiety. The more you know about how to handle these areas the more enjoyable your relationship with your new furry friend will be.

Training Puppies Not to Bite With a Simple Command

A simple command is all it takes when training puppies not to bite. The benefits of good behavior in a puppy, begins with targeted training early in its life. When you try to play with your new pet does he have a puppy biting problem? Are you waking up to “presents” left by your new pet and need to know how to house train a puppy fast? Then the training tips in this article will help you solve the problems.

Target the problems.

Like most children, puppies need to have a routine that will deliver a desired behavior at a convenient time for you.

Stay focused.

When you’ve had your puppy for awhile, the times that you need to focus your training should become apparent. After the training process begins you will need to remain consistent. A puppy biting problem may have to include all family members so plan ahead. Choose a simple command that the new puppy will recognize as problem, such as the word “No.” The new puppy will soon recognize the command words you’ve chosen. Walking the puppy outside after his meals will become a routine. If your timing is consistent with walking the puppy outside after mealtime, the puppy will establish a routine.

Give puppy a treat.

Puppies are simple creatures and are easily pleased with small tokens of affection or treats. You will accelerate the training with treats and rewards. The puppy will begin to understand that the treats are related to the behavior. When you are house breaking the puppy, regular walks around the neighborhood right after their meals, are a good way to encourage bathroom activities outdoors.

Understand your authority.

Don’t wait to correct the puppy, reinforce the rules as close to offense as possible. The important thing to remember is to correct the behavior with a command as soon as the infraction happens. Puppies have to be able to relate what they have done to what displeases you. Puppies have very short memories and you cannot expect them to understand something that happened earlier in the day.

Training puppies not to bite is not as hard as you may think, just stay consistent and reward the good behavior and the puppy biting problem will go away with time. While not everyone knows how to house train a puppy, if they apply the tips in this article to their methods the job will be easy. Lastly, you will want to give your new puppy some time to learn the behaviors that are acceptable.
