3 Top Tips To Avoid Puppy Disasters

]]>

Of course, these tips are just the beginning. A complete training program that builds a bond between you and your pup is the key to a happy, well-behaved dog. Luckily, there are legitimate training methods and shortcuts that actually work. Over the years I have trained several hundred of pure and mixed breeds for obedience , general companionship, tracking and some rescue work.I have seen some great dogs with bad owners that didn’t know how to communicate with their dogs. I am writing these articles for two reasons. First , I am physically incapable of doing what I used to love to do …..dog training. Secondly I want to help educate the average dog owner on how to properly communicate and work with your future best friend…your buddy.

It doesn’t take long after working with your dog that a bonding does take place and they do become your best friend.Think about it. You have been at work all day, you are tired and you still have to fight the traffic to get home. The days of June Cleaver and the kids running to the door to greet you when you come home doesn’t happen anymore, but your best buddy greets you.It is indeed a genuine greeting too. A loss of your best friend is unnecessary and disastrous. After doing all that puppy research you bring him/her home from the breeder or you found the most adorable “pet” at the pound. Nevertheless the human emotional thinking kicks in and people decide to have a baby shower for him/her and the new furry friend is inundated with tons of toys. Everyone is excited as the newcomer squashes a toy that squeaks or shakes a toy containing bells that rattle.

ACTION…take all of these “unapproved” dog toys away right now and throw them out.I don’t know what the stats on puppy choking death is but I have witnessed the death of a dog, a yellow lab, choke to death due to a cute little toy containing a bell. The lab had chewed through the plastic toy exposing the bell only to choke to death a few hours later. So unnecessary!

I’ll go a little easier on you for the next tip.By following this next tip you will thank me over and over

You will save yourself hundreds if not thousands of dollars on vet bills by taking this initiative. At some point in time you are are going to have to do one or all of the following with your dog.You will want to take his temperature, give it medication, check or clean his teeth, regularly clip his toe nails, check ears for infection or bathe him after being sprayed by a skunk. Regardless of what task you are confronted with for the well-being of your pet,you do not want some snapping, squirming, uncooperative brat making your job next to impossible.

ACTION…..take quiet time with your dog EACH day. While both of you are lying on the floor, I want you to gently touch him all over. This does not have to be done in one session. You could start one day by touching him between his toes on his front paws. After you have been accepted for doing that say three days later touch him between his toes on the back feet. The end goal is for him to be ok with you putting your fingers in his mouth, his ears, his genital areas and so on.Finish off each days touching session with a light brushing as a reward.I don’t believe in giving food as a reward.Remember this is not a game and not a go-crazy session. You must always be in control. If he wants to play, you must discourage it.

Ok, last tip….like the first it deals with the safety of your dog.

This product if left for the dog to drink will mean almost instant death. Due to the sweetness of it, dogs love it and will drink it all up. Its called “anti-freeze” For people living in the colder climes, almost everyone has it lying around in their garage. The product is used to prevent water in your car’s hoselines from freezing.Often,a tray of anti-freeze is left on the garage floor after preparing your auto for the winter.

If this product is not put away into a container and properly labeled and sealed then you could be exposing your dog to a needless disaster.

As I mentioned to you before these simple little preparations of building a strong base with your dog will indeed save you a lot of aggravation and money. But if you are like me the money would mean absolutely nothing in order to save the life of my dog.To lose my dog over something that could have been prevented would haunt me forever. Thanks I hope I’ve helped someone.

A Well-Trained Puppy Is A Happy Puppy

If you are reading this article you might be thinking about buying a puppy; or already bought on. Congratulations on the new addition to your home! You now have a friend who is always ready to play, never too tired to go for a walk and one of the most loyal companions you will ever have. There are some things you are going to need to know about training your puppy. A puppy is only as well-behaved as his training allows.

During the first few weeks your puppy needs constant supervision to prevent accidents in the house. But it’s easier to teach good habits now than it is to correct bad behavior later in life.  Your puppy needs to start understanding what is and isn’t acceptable in your home right away. You are the leader of the pack in the home and your puppy looks to you to work out what is allowed and what isn’t.

It’s important that your puppy starts to understand their boundaries. You will need to decide soon what the limits are – what furniture they may or may not climb on – what areas of the house they are allowed. Decide where your puppy will sleep and what they may or may not chew on.

Getting your puppy housetrained is not difficult and can be quick if you follow some of these tips. Make housetraining a painless and quick procedure by using the crate method.

The Crate method

The crate method is well known because it is one of the most humane ways to train a puppy. Your puppy will need to relieve himself after eating, drinking, running, playing. The frequency will depend on the size of your dog and also on the breed. Be careful – it can happen as soon as 15 minutes after any of these activities.  One of the easiest ways to keep your home pee free is to keep a record of when he needs to go. Try to learn the natural schedule and take your puppy outside at the times when you know they are going to need to go.  Plan your walks around this schedule. Take the puppy out when you expect they will need to urinate.

When your puppy is 10 weeks old until they are six months they will need to be walked between 5 and 10 times a day. Quite a task if you are not used to including a puppy in your daily schedule. Take turns walking the puppy. One of the most important things about housetraining you pup is that you do not return from your walks until he/she has urinated and done all his business.
If for some reason you need to go inside before he has gone you will need to take your puppy out every 15 minutes. Give lots of praise and affection when your puppy has done what you wanted. You might feel silly praising your puppy for going “wee wee” (or other!) but it is very important to the housetraining process.

Some tips for using the crate:

The crate method works and is one of the most humane ways to train your puppy.  It works because dogs are naturally neat and don’t like to eliminate in their sleeping area. If your puppy sleeps in the crate they will not want to mess in it. It’s an instinctive desire to keep their sleeping area clean.

The crate should become a sanctuary for your puppy. A crate is your dogs’ den in the house; their very own ‘safe space’. Your puppy needs to associate the crate with positive feelings. Put your puppy’s favorite blanket, toys and treats inside.

Help your puppy get used to the crate by leaving the door open until the dog seems comfortable. It’s important that your puppy is comfortable in the crate – the more comfortable they are – the less likely they are to soil inside.

Never use the crate as punishment. The crate must be associated with positive feelings. If your puppy does start whining, barking or scratching don’t let them out.  Establish a regular schedule. After feeding take you puppy outside until they have done their business.

Put your puppy in the crate at night – but make sure to take him outside before bedtime and first thing in the morning.  Let your puppy play for a while after they have done their business. Don’t give your puppy free reign of the house until they are housetrained.

Make a chart of when your puppy needs to go. Take the puppy outside within 15 minutes of eating, or any other time you know they will need to go.

After they have done their business; play with them for a while and then put your puppy in the crate for a nap. Repeat this throughout the day. After your puppy is fully housetrained you can leave the crate open during the day.
Some do’s and don’ts when housetraining:

DO

- If you are going to be away for long periods of time put your puppy in an area of the house where you are prepared for accidents. Put newspaper in this area.

- Limit the food and water supply if you are going to be gone for long periods of time. If it’s hot make sure your puppy has enough to drink (but remember what goes in must come out!).

- Praise your puppy when they are good.

- Be consistent. You don’t want to confuse your puppy.

- Involve the whole family in the training process. Even small children can participate in the housetraining.

- Be realistic, you can’t get mad with a puppy for not being completely housetrained. Accidents happen despite your most careful schedule.

Don’ts

- Don’t ever use the crate as punishment.

- Don’t let your puppy outside of your designated area until they are housetrained.

- Don’t reprimand your puppy for accidents.

If this all sounds like a lot of work – don’t worry. Your puppy should be completely housetrained after about 6 months. Even sooner if you use the crate method. As your puppy gets older it will get easier.  A well trained puppy will bring much more happiness into the home then an untrained puppy.  Owner and puppy will be more happy and in tune with each other for years to come.

Potty Train Puppy

Raising a puppy is fun and rewarding. However, it can be intimidating to try and potty train a puppy for the first time. We’ll look at a few simple tips that will help make it easy for you and your new puppy.

Before you bring a new puppy home, try to plan ahead a little bit. If you can, plan to spend the first week at home to help your puppy get situated and comfortable in your house. Lots of people buy a new puppy on the weekend and go back to work on Monday. The first several days will be crucial to get your puppy potty trained as soon as possible, so this is a bad situation to start off in. Planning ahead will allow you to spend time to help make your puppy comfortable and overcome any initial fears of a new environment. This also will give you the time to get your puppy used to a set schedule, which is very important in successful potty training.

It’s also important to understand your puppy won’t be perfect. Expect to deal with some mistakes and accidents; it’s just going to be a part of the process. When you first bring him home, spread out a newspaper next to an outside door. If you catch him peeing inside, move him on to this newspaper, but don’t scold him. The key is going to be to gently teach him where it’s ok to go to the bathroom, and provide lots of positive reinforcement when he uses the right area. Take your puppy outside regularly, and make a big deal out of when he pees outside. Praise him, pet him, and use a consistent word he can get used to. ‘Go potty, good dog’ is a perfect phrase to use, and make sure to give him a lot of attention when he pees or poops outside. The stronger you can make the connection between him peeing outside and you petting him and praising him, the faster potty training will go.

Along with using a consistent phrase, develop a consistent ‘good dog’ tone of voice. Most people do this naturally with animals, so it should be easy to do. Use this tone whenever you’re rewarding your puppy for behaving the correct way, whether it’s potty training or obedience training. If you catch your puppy peeing inside, quickly say ‘No’ in a firm tone, and move him to the newspaper. Once he’s there, then you switch to the ‘good dog’ tone to re-assure him. You can also use a little dab of urine from a mistake to mark the scent on the newspaper, so your puppy can associate peeing with the newspaper.

Following these simple tips will help make potty training your puppy a quick and painless experience, both for you and for your new companion.

Taking a young puppy for a walk can be a start and stop affair! Puppies love to sniff everything and mark everything and will often stop dead when they encounter something unfamiliar to them. Some people think they buy a crate, put it out and put some comfy blankets inside, and their dog will automatically love it. Some people don’t realize how loud and noisy a dog can be when put in a crate when they don’t want to be there.

If your dog is keeping you up all night and causing you headaches, take a look below at some of our training tips!

There is a lot more to training a dog to enjoy their crate than this! Introducing a dog or puppy to a crate for the first time, you want to make it a positive experience. Some things you can use to make the crate a positive experience are things such as; food, treats, toys, chews, and kongs stuffed with something yummy.

A dog who associates their crate with something positive is more likely to enjoy going into their crate and staying there quietly when needed!

One fun thing to do is randomly, through out the day, put treats, stuffed kongs, chew toys, favorite toys in the crate and let your dog or puppy find them. Your dog will start going to their crate themselves to see if anything else magically appeared in there.

Wouldn’t you check back more often if every time you went into your closet you found a hundred dollar bill? I know I sure would!

If your dog or puppy loves toys, try playing games with them by their crate and every now and then tossing it in. Anything you can do to get your dog or puppy used to going in and out of the crate is a huge stepping stone. You could also try getting them to go in their crate, don’t make them or push them, just point and see if they will go in. If they do, say YES! or use a clicker and toss the toy for them to go get as their reward.

Dogs love this kind of training, it makes them forget about exactly what they didn’t want to do and focus more on the fun. This in turn makes them more willing to do what they at first didn’t want to!

So far we’ve learned, we need to make the crate as positive as possible! Use your imagination and see what types of fun games you can come up with to get your dog enjoying their crate! Read more below for some more of out tips.

A great way to get your dog liking their crate even more is by feeding them their breakfast and dinner in there. You can leave their door wide open while they eat at first, then gradually start closing the door. Start slow on this, first closing the door half way, then most of the way, before finally being able to close the door all the way then opening it when they are done eating.

Soon your dog will be running to their crate to see if they can get their food a little early!

If your dog or puppy loves kongs or chews, see if you can get your puppy focused on a kong and close the door while they are in their chewing on it and trying to get their treats out. Make it easy at first where they are only in their for a few minutes, then open the door. Some dogs and puppies loose focus on the kong when the door is shut and just want to come back out. If this is the case, make it super easy with one treat in the kong. Once they get that treat out of the kong, let them come back out. Build on this as it is important for a dog or puppy to be able to focus on a kong or other interactive toy while in the crate instead of just trying to get back out.

There are several things you can do when training a dog to enjoy their crate.
